Martial Arts training offers benefits both at the physical and mental level. Kata, bunkai and free sparring build physical stamina, coordination, balance and mental focus. Stretching increases flexiblility, which yields advantages both in and out of the dojo. The study of technique taught in the dojo through kata builds mental acuity. Naturally, karate training teaches self-defense, but the lesser-known benefit of training is that it ultimately teaches the student how not to fight. A person trained in the martial arts who walks with the knowledge of how to discern and avoid dangerous situations, and the confidence that comes from knowing how to defend onesself, will often be more able to keep their wits about them under pressure and be less likely to resort to violence when confronted.
